Die niederländischen Einwanderer bezeichneten ihre Sprache selbstbewußt als "Afrikaans". Die auf dem Niederländischen beruhende Sprachkration ist die einzige germanische Sprache, die außerhalb Europas entstanden ist. Die Umgangssprache entwickelte sich bis 1775 aus dem Niederländischen, Deutschen und afrikanischen Sprachen. Erst im Jahr 1875 bildete sich die patriotische Vereinigung "Genootskap vir Regte Afrikaanders", die sich für die Anerkennung des "Afrikaans" als eigene Sprache einsetzte. Im Jahr 1925 wurde "Afrikaans" schließlich neben "Englisch" als Amtssprache akzeptiert.

Englisch wurde in den 1820er Jahren (mit anderen Maßnahmen zur Verstärkung des britischen Einflusses) in Südafrika als Amtssprache eingeführt.

Am 16. September 1795 übergab der holländische Hochkommissar Sluysken die Zitadelle von Kapstadt an den englischen General James Henry Craig. Die niederländische Flagge wurde durch den Union Jack ersetzt. Die niederländischen Buren sehen sich nun den Ureinwohnern und den Briten gegenüber. Sie suchen ihr Heil im Landesinneren.

Die Bezeichnung "Griqua" für eine geht auf John Campbell zurück. Dieser bereiste Südafrika zwischen 1812 und 1821. Am Zusammenfluss von Oranje und Vaal traf er auf Bantu, Khoikhoi und Weiße. Er gab ihnen den auf Khoikhoi und Buren zurückgehenden Namen "Griquas". Sie selbst nannten sich "Bastards".

1. A brief outline of its history

The history of English in South Africa dates from the arrival of the British at the Cape in 1806. As was the case in most colonies, English was brought to South Africa during the 19th century initially by soldiers, and then by administrators, missionaries, settlers, and fortune-seekers. It took root as a southern African language as a result of the settlements of 1820 (in the Eastern Cape) and 1848-1862 (in Natal), and of the influx to the diamond mines of Kimberley (1870) and the gold mines of the Witwatersrand (1886).

SA English has a flavour all its own, borrowing freely from Afrikaans - which is similar to Dutch and Flemish - as well as from the country's many African languages, with some words coming from colonial-era Malay and Portuguese immigrants.

Note: In many words derived from Afrikaans, the letter "g" is pronounced in the same way as the "ch" in the Scottish "loch" or the German "achtung" - a kind of growl at the back of the throat. In the pronunciation guides below, the spelling for this sound is given as "gh".

The term South African English (SAfrE, SAfrEng, SAE, en-ZA[1]) is applied to the first language dialects of English spoken by South Africans, with the L1 English variety spoken by Zimbabweans, Zambians and Namibians, being recognised as offshoots.

There is some social and regional variation within South African English. Social variation within South African English has been classified into three groupings: Cultivated, closely approximating Received Pronunciation and associated with upper class; General, a social indicator of the middle class, and Broad, associated with the working class and/or Afrikaans descent, and closely approximating the second-language Afrikaans-English variety. This is similar to the case in Australian English.
