Another name for the telephone handset symbol "#".

This word is beginning to appear in a few dictionaries, but still seems mostly to be a jargon term of the North American telephone business. It has reached semi-official status by being mentioned in international standards documents but that’s no guarantee of a wide circulation any time soon.
...
In the early 1960s, the Labs were working on ways to interface telephones to computers and invented what is now called touch-tone dialling. This needed two additional special keys on handsets, both of which have since become standard. One of these is the "*" symbol, usually known as the "asterisk" but which Bell Labs decided to call the "star key". The other was the "#" symbol.

Medieval writing

(E?)(L?) http://medievalwriting.50megs.com/

An introduction to the history of medieval writing, including the origins of our written culture, paleography and the history of scripts, and the nature of literacy and the written word in the middle ages. Manuscript books and documents, and the very process of writing itself, are part of the cultural heritage of the western world. And paleography is not a scarey word, however you spell it.

ABCDEFGHI_KLMNOPQRST_V_XYZ

As everyone knows, there are 26 letters in the alphabet we use for writing English. That alphabet is called the "Roman alphabet" or "Latin alphabet", but the alphabet the Romans actually used for writing Latin had only 23 letters. Where did the extra letters come from?

One of those extra letters is "j". Classical Latin didn’t use the (j) sound, but it did use the letter "i" both as a vowel and to represent a consonant with a sound like that of the English consonant (y). The Latin name of the Roman general who conquered Gaul, for example, was "Iulius" (pronounced "yoolius") Caesar, not "Julius" Caesar. But in the Romance languages that evolved from Latin the consonant version of "i" evolved into other sounds. In French it became a (zh) sound; in Middle English words of French origin it eventually became a (j) sound. By the 1400s, scribes were consistently using a modified form of the letter "i" to indicate the consonant with the (j) sound: by lengthening the down-stroke of the letter and giving it a slight hook, they had created the letter we know as "j". But English printers still represented the (j) sound with the letter "i", even as late as the 1600s; the 1623 First Folio edition of Shakespeare’s works, for instance, contains "The Tragedie of Romeo and Iuliet". By 1667, when Milton’s "Paradise Lost" was published, the use of "j" had become customary in print.

A similar process accounts for the adoption of "u". In Latin, "v" was used both for the vowel (oo) sound and for a consonant closely approximating our (w) sound; scribes in the Middle Ages invented the "u" for vowel sounds, keeping the "v" for use as a consonant. By the early 1600s, it was customary to use "v" in print when the letter came at the beginning of a word (as in the First Folio’s "The Merchant of Venice", but to use "u" when it came in the middle of a word (as in "Loue’s Labour’s Lost"). But by the time of the publication of "Paradise Lost", the "u" and "v" were being used as we use them today.

The third of the extra letters is "w". The (w) sound was very common in Old English words, where it was typically indicated by the runic letter "?" or "wynn". Later, in Middle English, it became customary to indicate (w) with a "double u", written "uu" or "vv". By the early 1600s, its printed form was similar to that of our "w", although we can still see some separation between the "v"’s in the title of the First Folio’s "The Merry Wives of Windsor". By the time of "Paradise Lost", the "w"’s are indistinguishable from those we use today.

But though the "j", "u", and "w" had been adopted into English as de facto letters in their own right, not everybody thought of them as legitimately distinct members of the alphabet. Alphabets as presented in eighteenth-century embroidered samplers often omit one or more of them, and Samuel Johnson’s 1766 dictionary treats "u" and "v" as the same letter for the purpose of alphabetization — "vaunt" is entered before "udder", for instance, and "covet" before "cough" — although the two letters are presented as typographically distinct. Only starting in the 1800s did lexicographers consistently arrange their entries according to the 26-letter alphabet we are familiar with today.

ASCII (W3)

"ASCII" (1963) steht für "American Standard Code for Information Interchange", ein genormter Schriftzeichen-Code für den Nachrichtenaustausch.

Mit einem Byte lassen sich (2**8 =) 256 Zeichen darstellen. Dies erschien bei der Entwicklung genug, um alle (amerikanischen) Zeichen darzustellen. Aber unter Einbeziehung aller Sprachen der Welt, kommt man schnell an eine Grenze.

ASCII is a common numerical code for computers and other devices that work with text. Computers can only understand numbers, so an ASCII code is the numerical representation of a character such as 'a' or '@'. When mentioned in relation to domain names or strings, ASCII refers to the fact that before internationalization only the letters a-z, digits 0-9, and the hyphen "-", were allowed in domain names. The predominant character set encoding of present-day computers. The standard version uses 7 bits for each character, whereas most earlier codes (including early drafts of ASCII prior to June 1961) used fewer. This change allowed the inclusion of lowercase letters - a major win - but it did not provide for accented letters or any other letterforms not used in English (such as the German sharp-S or the ae-ligature which is a letter in, for example, Norwegian). It could be worse, though. It could be much worse. See EBCDIC to understand how.

Computers are much pickier and less flexible about spelling than humans; thus, hackers need to be very precise when talking about characters, and have developed a considerable amount of verbal shorthand for them. Every character has one or more names -- some formal, some concise, some silly. Common jargon names for ASCII characters are collected here. See also individual entries for bang, excl, open, ques, semi, shriek, splat, twiddle, and Yu-Shiang Whole Fish.

This list derives from revision 2.3 of the Usenet ASCII pronunciation guide. Single characters are listed in ASCII order; character pairs are sorted in by first member. For each character, common names are given in rough order of popularity, followed by names that are reported but rarely seen; official ANSI/CCITT names are surrounded by brokets: <>. Square brackets mark the particularly silly names introduced by INTERCAL. The abbreviations "l/r" and "o/c" stand for left/right and "open/close" respectively. Ordinary parentheticals provide some usage information.

The pronunciation of # as 'pound' is common in the U.S. but a bad idea; Commonwealth Hackish has its own, rather more apposite use of 'pound sign' (confusingly, on British keyboards the pound graphic happens to replace #; thus Britishers sometimes call # on a U.S.-ASCII keyboard 'pound', compounding the American error). The U.S. usage derives from an old-fashioned commercial practice of using a # suffix to tag pound weights on bills of lading. The character is usually pronounced 'hash' outside the U.S. There are more culture wars over the correct pronunciation of this character than any other, which has led to the ha ha only serious suggestion that it be pronounced 'shibboleth' (see Judges 12:6 in an Old Testament or Tanakh).

The 'uparrow' name for circumflex and 'leftarrow' name for underline are historical relics from archaic ASCII (the 1963 version), which had these graphics in those character positions rather than the modern punctuation characters.

The 'swung dash' or 'approximation' sign is not quite the same as tilde in typeset material but the ASCII tilde serves for both (compare angle brackets).

Some other common usages cause odd overlaps. The #, $, >, and & characters, for example, are all pronounced "hex" in different communities because various assemblers use them as a prefix tag for hexadecimal constants (in particular, # in many assembler-programming cultures, $ in the 6502 world, > at Texas Instruments, and & on the BBC Micro, Sinclair, and some Z80 machines). See also splat.

The inability of ASCII text to correctly represent any of the world's other major languages makes the designers' choice of 7 bits look more and more like a serious misfeature as the use of international networks continues to increase (see software rot). Hardware and software from the U.S. still tends to embody the assumption that ASCII is the universal character set and that characters have 7 bits; this is a major irritant to people who want to use a character set suited to their own languages. Perversely, though, efforts to solve this problem by proliferating 'national' character sets produce an evolutionary pressure to use a smaller subset common to all those in use.

HTML ASCII Reference
The ASCII character-set is used to send information between computers on the Internet.

The ASCII Character Set
"ASCII" stands for the "American Standard Code for Information Interchange". It was designed in the early 60's, as a standard character-set for computers and hardware devices like teleprinters and tapedrives.
ASCII is a 7-bit character set containing 128 characters.
It contains the numbers from 0-9, the uppercase and lowercase English letters from A to Z, and some special characters.
The character-sets used in modern computers, HTML, and Internet are all based on ASCII.
The following table lists the 128 ASCII characters and their equivalent HTML entity codes.

Characters and ASCII Equivalents
Special characters require special coding. Use these ascii equivalents to format special characters such as ™, ¿, ® and many others into your html document.

ASCII is a code for representing English characters as numbers, with each letter assigned a number from 0 to 127. For example, the ASCII code for uppercase M is 77. Most computers use ASCII codes to represent text, which makes it possible to transfer data from one computer to another.

The standard ASCII character set uses just 7 bits for each character. There are several larger character sets that use 8 bits, which gives them 128 additional characters. The extra characters are used to represent non-English characters, graphics symbols, and mathematical symbols. Several companies and organizations have proposed extensions for these 128 characters. The DOS operating system uses a superset of ASCII called extended ASCII or high ASCII. A more universal standard is the ISO Latin 1 set of characters, which is used by many operating systems, as well as Web browsers.

Another set of codes that is used on large IBM computers is EBCDIC.

asciibetical (W3)

Coming from Eastern Canada, "asscone" was originally used to describe a Lindy. This continued until the word spread and now generally means "someone very un-liked".

Christopher Johnson's ASCII Art Collection was revealed to the Internet in November of 1994, back when Netscape 1.0 was "soooo much better than Mosaic" and Internet Explorer didn't exist yet. Here we are 11 years later, and if my web-server traffic statistics are any indication, ASCII art is more popular now than it's ever been.

(E?)(L?) http://www.iconbug.com/what-are-icons/

What exactly are icons?

People use the term Icon loosely and often misuse it referring to applications and links themselves with no overlaying image. An Icon simply defined is an Image or Graphic that represents something.
...
Clean and crisp icons are hard to find nowadays. As a web developer and designer I am always in need of proper images for things like Twitter and Facebook Icons as well as other more functional imagry like phone’s for phone numbers, link images for links, download images for download buttons etc. Finding an Icon Database online is much easier than downloading one and attempting to organize it into searchable and sortable content on every computer and device you own. Not to mention the image scaling required to get the image the right size.

So what do we suggest? We suggest using an icon library that is stored in the cloud. Why would you waste your hard drive space, your time, and go through the stress of having to re-size thousands of images. What you need is the ability to quickly find not only the image you are looking for, but also the proper image size.

Labanotation (Tanz)

(E?)(L?) http://www.lodc.org/
Named after its originator, Rudolf Laban, 'Labanotation' is the system for recording movement. First published in 1928, the system has since been highly developed through use by many practitioners in a wide range of movement styles and disciplines.
A predominant use of Labanotation has been in the dance field, long deprived of a written form and a recorded history. Many choreographic works as well as dance techniques - ballet, contemporary and ethnic - have been recorded and are now available as a heritage to future generations.
The Laban system has the advantage of being used in a very simple form, called Motif Notation as well as filling the needs for very subtle distinctions in use of space and the body.
A very specific movement, described in great detail, might be that of a hand gesture as used in Spanish dance or an Asian sequence in which the fingers, one by one, perform a delicate, fluent folding, gathering action leading with the little finger, while the arm, moving in space, rotates outward.
The use of Labanotation has spread around the world, centres of activity being not only in the Europe and the USA but also in Australia, China, Malaysia, Mexico and South Africa.

Smiley: the first Smiley (W3)

"Smiley" ist eine Substantivierung von engl. "smile".

A Usenet post which contains the supposed first use of :) as a smiley or emoticon, from 19 September 1982, has been uncovered.

Smileys and Emoticons

A smiley is a sequence of characters on your computer keyboard. If you don't see it, try tilting your head to the left - the colon represents the eyes, the dash represents the nose and the right parenthesis represents the mouth. Smileys usually follow after the punctuation (or in place of the punctuation) at the end of a sentence. A smiley tells someone what you really mean when you make an offhand remark. They are also called emoticons because they intend to convey emotion!

A new generation of smileys has appeared on the scene and NetLingo is fast trying to track them down. We consider these "straight-on smileys" as another form of ASCII ART: those in which you do not tilt your head but rather look at it straight on, such as @(*0*)@ for a koala. A new section is coming soon!

And, lest you think that's all, there are also now assicons...emoticons which use another part of the body! Here is our ever-growing list of smileys...enjoy!

;-) (Freeware, Deutsch)"

Apparently, in November 1982 more symbols were proposed.

...
In the early years of written English, punctuation served to mark pauses and other aspects of speech when text was read aloud. Over the subsequent centuries, punctuation marks were refined, eventually being used to indicate grammatical relationships between parts of a sentence. Today, punctuation serves both purposes, though the grammatical function dominates.

This guide shows the current style of American punctuation. British punctuation is slightly different, as explained here.
