Hybrid Kordesii Rosen

(E?)(L?) https://www.helpmefind.com/rose/gl.php?n=102

[From Peter Schneider on Roses, by Peter Schneider, p. 138:]

The kordesii climbing shrubs originated by Wilhelm Kordes in the 1950s are noted for their shiny foliage, disease resistance and winter hardiness... Because the kordesiis are classified with the shrubs, that is where kordesii specimens must be exhibited in rose shows conducted under the rules of the American Rose Society. Please refer to this book for more information about exhibiting them.

Kordesii Roses (See Old Roses) - A hybrid between R. rugosa and R. wichuraiana named Max Graf (I 9 I 9) was a sterile diploid, but Kordes succeeded in raising three seedlings from it in 1940 and 1950-1 which were fertile tetraploids, the beginning of a new race of Kordesii hybrids, such as Parkdirektor Riggers.

Rosa kordesii

(E?)(L?) http://www.rosefile.com/RosePages/GlossaryOZ.html

"Rosa kordesii" - This is one of a tiny number of species roses bred by man (another is r. lutea, a yellow used by Pernet-Ducher to create Soleil d'Or). Kordes worked for decades to do so and finally succeded in crossing rosa rugosa with rosa wichuriana. (more correctly Max Graf is this cross and r kordesii is the fertile seedling obtained by self-pollinating this plant for decades.)

It is less important as a garden specimen than as an ancestor to roses that are tough, vigorous, and disease-free. Silver Jubilee, the highest ARS-rated hybrid tea has a kordesii ancestor. So do Dortmund and John Cabot, the second and third highest rated climbers.
