Roses Bred by Delbard

Delbard's introductions get little exposure stateside. I have only seen "Altissimo" and "Gingersnap" in real life. Altissimo means "highest" but as a climbing rose it is just about as short as they get. Some hybrid tea roses are probably taller. But what's in a name. The plant produces huge, five-petalled roses in a sultry red unlike any other rose. It is fairly vigorous and free of disease. And for this reason it is loved. "Grand Siecle" the breeder calls 'feminine, elegant, beautiful'. This description perfectly captured my own impression of the rose - or its image in a photo - long before I heard it described. Some may find it to be just one more good pink, but I think maybe it has an edge on a lot of good pink roses.

The most unusual of the lot is "Imperatrice Farah". The petal is a creamy buff or ivory color. The ends of the petals blush toward red, but have a distinctive russet cast that perfectly complements the ivory. This is not a rose color that will work and play well with pink and cerise and crimson and mauve and lilac and white. Nor will it play nicely with yellow or primrose. It will be overpowered by gold or apricot. Give it coral and buff and perhaps a touch of vermilion and it will look good. We imagine this rose will grow best in a mediterranean climate; and it will look best there too, framed by limestone arches and with dusky violet snow-capped mountain peaks looming in the distance.
