The Internet Archive is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that was founded to build an Internet library. Its purposes include offering permanent access for researchers, historians, scholars, people with disabilities, and the general public to historical collections that exist in digital format. In late 1999, the organization started to grow to include more well-rounded collections. Now the Internet Archive includes texts, audio, moving images, and software as well as archived web pages in our collections, and is working to provide specialized services relating to training, education, or adaptive reading or information access needs of blind or other persons with disabilities.

Barbara Carrera - Rose
Barbara Carrera ob Orange & Orange blend, Floribunda 1994
Heute heisst engl. "bonanza" = dt. "reiche Erzader" (bes. Edelmetalle), engl. "a large lucky win" = "Goldgrube", "Glücksquelle", "Glückssträhne", "Wohlstand", "Fundgrube", "sehr einträglich", "erfolgreich", "wohlhabend" oder allgemein "Reichtum" oder "grosse Menge". Als Adjektiv kann es "lukrativ" bedeuten.
Als Wurzel wird ide. "*dwo-n-", "*dwe-n-" postuliert mit der Bedeutung dt. "etwas richtig, angemessen machen". Diese findet man auch in lat. "bene" = dt. "gut", "wohl" und darauf zurück gehend in engl. "benefit" = dt. "Vorteil", "Nutzen", "Gewinn", engl. "beneficial" = dt. "nützlich", "wohltuend", "förderlich", und engl. "benevolent" = dt.
Michael Landon als Joseph "Little Joe" Cartwright
Victor Sen Yung als Hop Sing
The Great Bonanza. Important discovery of silver in Nevada.
...
And "Cadillacs". Handsome, strong, adventurous Jack Tenrec, adept in the ancient art of automobile mechanics, was the hero. Technology had generally been set back by the upheaval, but bits and pieces of it survived here and there, including the fleet in Jack's large garage, which leaned heavily toward Jack's own favorite model - those big ol' mid-20th century "Cadillacs", which he acquired and restored with alacrity. Oil wasn't being refined anymore, but he was able to modify them to run on dinosaur guano. "You get used to the smell", he observed, which can also be said of gasoline.

Around 72 hours of video is uploaded to YouTube every minute. It would take you approximately 6400 years to watch all those millions of videos. So good luck trying to find something worth watching on your lunch break.
Devour is here to help.
"cuckoo" = dt. "verrückt" herstellen - also "Kuckucksnest" = "Nervenheilanstalt".
Michael Kirk Douglas, Filmschauspieler, Filmproduzent (25.09.1944 (New Brunswick, New Jersey)

Auf der Jagd nach dem grünen Diamanten ("Romancing the Stone") - Abenteuerfilm (Regie: Robert Zemeckis) (1983)

Ken Kesey, Schriftsteller (17.09.1935 (La Junta, Colorado) - 10.11.2001 (Eugene, Oregon)
Werke:
...
Hintergrund
Der Titel basiert auf einem englischen Kinderreim:
Vintery, mintery, cutery, corn, Apple seed and apple thorn; Wire, briar, limber lock, Three geese in a flock. One flew east, And one flew west, And one flew over the cuckoo's nest.
„cuckoo“ bedeutet in amerikanischer Umgangssprache „verrückt“.

Film Terms Glossary: Oftentimes, film-making terms are not clearly defined for the average person. In order to be knowledgeable about the movie-making art form and the techniques of cinema, one must understand the fundamental vocabulary and language of film studies. Therefore, some of the most basic and common terms are defined in this compendium for reference. Simple definitions are provided for often complex terms as a baseline for media literacy. Illustrations and examples from films are provided with many of the terms, to help describe them more fully. Tips for Critically Viewing Films is also provided by this site.
This is not a complete collection of all film-making terms, because so many of them are too obscure or technical to be included. However, this listing should provide enough background for a majority of the important terms, and prompt the reader to research them further. When discussing film and the creative craft of film-making, many of these terms are used to describe the complicated and expensive process or task of making movies - from conception to finished product. The multiple areas of film-making included within this fairly comprehensive glossary are:
the key film theories, movements, and genres
aspects of film history and film criticism
various slang, lingo or buzzwords
kinds of film-making equipment
the basics of cinematography and stylistic information (types of camera shots)
numerous industry-specific, business terms or technical terms
the various movie crafts (screenwriting, directing, special effects, sound, editing, etc.)

The Early Motion Pictures and Sound Recordings of the Edison Companies
Inventing Entertainment: The Early Motion Pictures and Sound Recordings of the Edison Companies
About this Collection
This site features 341 motion pictures, 81 disc sound recordings, and other related materials, such as photographs and original magazine articles. Cylinder sound recordings will be added to this site in the near future. In addition, histories are given of Edison's involvement with motion pictures and sound recordings, as well as a special page focusing on the life of the great inventor. Prolific inventor Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931) has had a profound impact on modern life. In his lifetime, the "Wizard of Menlo Park" patented 1,093 inventions, including the phonograph, the kinetograph (a motion picture camera), and the kinetoscope (a motion picture viewer). Edison managed to become not only a renowned inventor, but also a prominent manufacturer and businessman through the merchandising of his inventions. The collections in the Library of Congress's Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division contain an extraordinary range of the surviving products of Edison's entertainment inventions and industries.

AKA: Oscars, Academy Awards, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Awards
The term "Oscar" was coined by an anonymous person who remarked that the statue looked like their Uncle Oscar.
...
(E?)(L?) http://www.oscars.org/
Officially named the Academy Award of Merit, the statuette is better known by a nickname, Oscar, the origins of which aren't clear. A popular story has been that an Academy librarian and eventual executive director, Margaret Herrick, thought it resembled her Uncle Oscar and said so; and that the Academy staff began referring to it as Oscar.
In any case, by the sixth Awards Presentation in 1934, Hollywood columnist Sidney Skolsky used the name in his column in reference to Katharine Hepburn's first Best Actress win. The Academy itself didn't use the nickname officially until 1939.
There are several stories about the nickname's origin, and nobody is completely sure of the truth. The Academy supports this version: In the early '30s, an Academy librarian named Margaret Herrick remarked that the statue looked like her Uncle Oscar. The name stuck, and the Academy staff began referring to the statue as "Oscar." In 1934, Sidney Skolsky mentioned the nickname in a column on Katharine Hepburn's first Best Actress win. The name caught on, and the Academy officially adopted it in 1939.
According to the Academy, the Oscar statuette depicts a crusader knight, grasping a sword. The knight stands on a film reel, with five spokes that represent the five original branches of the Academy: Directors, Actors, Writers, Producers and Technicians.
View over 2,000 films from the Prelinger Archives!
"Prelinger Archives" was founded in 1983 by "Rick Prelinger" in New York City. Over the next twenty years, it grew into a collection of over 60,000 "ephemeral" (advertising, educational, industrial, and amateur) films. In 2002, the film collection was acquired by the Library of Congress, Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division. "Prelinger Archives" remains in existence, holding approximately 4,000 titles on videotape and a smaller collection of film materials acquired subsequent to the Library of Congress transaction. Its goal remains to collect, preserve, and facilitate access to films of historic significance that haven't been collected elsewhere. Included are films produced by and for many hundreds of important US corporations, nonprofit organizations, trade associations, community and interest groups, and educational institutions. Getty Images represents the collection for stock footage sale, and over 2,000 key titles (soon to be 2,500) are available here. As a whole, the collection currently contains over 10% of the total production of ephemeral films between 1927 and 1987, and it may be the most complete and varied collection in existence of films from these poorly preserved genres.

A film does not necessarily need two hours to tell a good story. We here at shortfil.ms rather think that short is beautiful.
Why does the world need a website like shortfil.ms?
Short films deserve way more attention than they get. Often they are highly sophisticated artworks. It is rather difficult to tell a story within a time up to 30 minutes than in a feature-length movie. But short films are by far not as accessible. Of course many of them can be found on the Internet - as shown on this site - but where to start looking?
We at shortfil.ms want to show the best short films on the web. Thus, we do all the research for you and will add at least one short film every day to our database. Furthermore shortfil.ms provides you with several opportunities to find a film that fits your demands right now. If you already know what you would like to see, you can just use our search tool to find it. Also this site may help you to discover new and exciting films.

Der Selfmade-Filmregisseur Stanley Kubrick (26.07.1928 (New York) - 07.03.1999 (Childwickbury Manor (bei London)) wurde u.a. durch folgende Filme bekannt:
Wege zum Ruhm ("Paths of Glory") - Kriegsdrama (1957)
Stanley Kubrick's interview with Jeremy Bernstein from 1966. First there's the interview itself, roughly 75 minutes of audio. Plus Bernstein's New Yorker profile of SK from November, 1966. An auction sheet offering the text of the profile, marked up by SK and finally a great personal memoir of the time from Bernstein.
Blur - The Universal
With the video for their 1995 release The Universal, the British pop group Blur has created a parallel to Stanley Kubrick’s works A Clockwork Orange and 2001: A Space Odyssey. This song, according to Blur’s lead singer Damon Albarn, is about a “drug like Prozac” that has taken over the lives of the people in the future. The theme of loss of free will in A Clockwork Orange, combined with the futuristic style of 2001: A Space Odyssey gives the video a setting necessary to create a powerful portrayal of this drug’s role in the future. Although The Universal and the movies are not direct parallels, there are significant similarities which need to be addressed.

typecast (W3)
Engl. "typecast" bedeutet wörtlich dt. "Typisierung". Engl. "typecast", auch engl. "type-cast", bezieht sich seit etwa 1937 auf Schauspieler. Man versteht darunter meist dt. "cast repeatedly in the same kind of role". Man könnte engl.
"type-cast". - Aber:
"Typecast" is one of many compound adjectives that are closed; such permanent compounds appear in dictionaries as such ["typecast" not "type-cast"].
Example sentence:
When she was younger, the actress was often "typecast" as the ingenue who is unwittingly pursued by several adoring men.

late 15c., "symbol", "emblem", from Latin "typus" = "figure", "image", "form", "kind", from Greek "typos" = "a blow", "dent", "impression", "mark", "effect of a blow"; "figure in relief", "image", "statue"; "anything wrought of metal or stone"; "general form", "character"; "outline", "sketch", from root of "typtein" = "to strike", "beat", from PIE "*tup-", variant of root "*(s)teu-" (1) "to push", "stick", "knock", "beat" (see "steep" (adj.)).
Extended 1713 to "printing blocks with letters carved on them in relief". The meaning "general form or character of some kind", "class" is attested in English from 1843, though it had that sense in Latin and Greek. "To be (someone's) type" = "be the sort of person that person is attracted to" is recorded from 1934.
type (v.)
"to write with a typewriter," 1888; see type (n.). Earlier it meant "to symbolize, typify" (1836) and "to foreshadow" (1590s). Related: Typed; typing.
mid-13c., "a throw", "an act of throwing", from "cast" (v.). In early use especially of dice, hence figurative uses relating to fortune or fate. Meaning "that which is cast" is from mid-15c. Meaning "dash or shade of color" is from c. 1600.
The sense of "a throw" carried an idea of "the form the thing takes after it has been thrown", which led to widespread and varied meanings, such as "group of actors in a play" (1630s). OED finds 42 distinct noun meaning and 83 verbal ones, with many sub-definitions. Many of the figurative senses converged in a general meaning "sort", "kind", "style" (mid-17c.). Meaning "model made from taking an impression of an object" is from c. 1500. A cast in the eye "slight squint" (early 14c.) preserves the older verbal sense of "warp", "turn", via the notion of "permanent motion or turn". As "plaster molded around an injured or diseased part", by 1883.
"cast" (v.)
c. 1200, "to throw", "throw violently", "fling", "hurl", from a Scandinavian source akin to Old Norse "kasta" = "to throw" (cognate with Swedish "kasta", Danish "kaste", North Frisian "kastin"), of uncertain origin. Meaning "to form in a mold" is late 15c. In the sense of "to throw" it replaced Old English "weorpan" (see "warp" (v.)), and itself largely has been superseded now by "throw", though "cast" still is used of "fishing lines" (17c.) and "glances" (13c.).
From c. 1300 as "emit", "give out"; also "throw to the ground"; also "shed or throw off"; also "calculate", "find by reckoning"; "chart (a course)". From late 14c. as "to calculate astrologically". From late 15c. as "bring forth abortively or prematurely". From 1711 as "distribute the parts (of a play) among the actors". Of votes from 1840, American English. To "cast up" is from 1530s as "compute", "reckon", late 15c. as "eject", "vomit".
also "type-cast", with reference to actors, 1937 (implied in "typecasting"), from "type" (n.) in the "general character" sense (perhaps a deliberate pun on the verbal phrase in the printing sense "to found types in molds", attested from 1847). See "type" (n.) + "cast" (v.).
Vannoccio Biringuccio Describes the "Fire-Using Arts, Including the First Description of Typecasting (1540)
In 1540 Italian metallurgist Vannoccio Biringuccio published De re pirotechnia at Venice. De re pirotechnia was the first comprehensive treatise on the pyrotechnic or "fire-using" arts, including mining, metallurgy, applied chemistry, gunpowder, military arts and fireworks. Significantly for the history of printing, it contained the first description of type-casting.
William Church Invents the First Machine for Type Composition (1822)
In 1822 American physician, inventor and civil engineer living in England William Church received British patent no. 4664 for "An Improved Apparatus for Printing." This patent which was illustrated with 8 large folding engineering drawings consisted of three parts: "first, a machine for "casting the printing types", and also of arranging them in boxes of letters, so that the types of the same denomination are placed side by side in ranges, ready to be transferred to the composing machinery. The second part of the apparatus consists of a machine, by which the individual types are selected and composed into words and sentences. The third part of the apparatus is a press for printing and delivering the sheets into a pile" (Church's patent p. 2).
The first patented machine for type composition, Church's invention never seems to have been built or used, and is known almost entirely from his patent, which showed a rapid "typecasting machine", a mechanical typesetter, and a newly designed bed-and-platen printing machine, in that order. These three devices comprised a system which was later followed by letterpress printers. That Church's machine was well known in England at the time the patent was issued is confirmed by the long, critical and almost incredulous discussion of it by Thomas Hansard in his Typographia, an Historical Sketch of the Origin and Progress of the Art of Printing (1825) pp. 665-677 where he discusses "The Printing Machines and other Inventions relative to Printing of Doctor William Church."
"While there is no evidence that a composing machine was built, the design included features which were embodied in later inventions. The type was stored in inclined channels, from which it was relased by the operation of a keyboard. The released type fell into a horizontal race where it was assembled by rocking arms into a continous line. Like other early composing machines, Church's did not provide for justification of the lines, leaving that to be done by hand. Power was provided by a clock-work mechanism" (Printing and the Mind of Man. Catalogue of an Exhibition at Earl's Court, London, 16-27 July 1963 [1963] No. 462).

The Press on which William Morris Printed the Kelmscott Chaucer is Sold, Again (1894)
On December 6, 2013 the Floor Model "Albion Press No. 6551" produced by "Hopkinson & Cope", and used by "William Morris's Kelmscott Press" in Kelmscott, England, to print the "Kelmscott Chaucer" and other books, was auctioned by Christie's in New York. The press was consigned by "Jethro K. Lieberman", who inherited it from his father "J. Ben Lieberman". Ben Lieberman acquired the press in 1960, prior to which it had been owned by typographer "Frederic W. Goudy", and by "C. R. Ashbee" at his "Essex House Press". The price realized was $233,000.
"Undoubtedly the most famous printing press in the annals of modern fine press publishing, William Morris's Albion 6551 handled the monumental task of printing his masterpiece, Chaucer's Works in 1896. The Kelmscott Press started printing in January 1891 at the press's premises on Upper Mall, a few doors down from Kelmscott House. About ten or twelve pressmen and compositors were employed, and as output increased rooms were taken in the adjacent building known as Sussex House. Soon after T.J. Cobden-Sanderson set up his Doves Bindery opposite Sussex House in 1893, Morris was able to rent rooms upstairs for his proofreaders who stayed there in the summer of 1894. Additional premises were taken on 1 January 1895 to accommodate this third Albion press, which was specifically purchased to print the folio Chaucer, which had fallen behind schedule (see Linda Parry, ed., William Morris, New York, 1996, pp.313-4).
Called "THE FINEST BOOK SINCE GUTENBERG" by Colin Franklin, the Chaucer is the supreme achievement of the forty-year artistic collaboration between Edward Burne-Jones, William Morris and the Kelmscott Press: "the final chapter of co-operation; the venture in which their particular talents are combined for the last time, and to spectacular effect" (Robinson). It is the largest and most highly praised of all the Kelmscott books, which Burne-Jones famously referred to as "a pocket cathedral -- it is so full of design." Earliest plans for the work dated to 1891 but printing of the book did not begin until August 1894, and it was only issued to subscribers in June 1896.
Purchased by Morris in 1894 for £52.10s, No. 6551 was one of the three full-sized Albions he was to own at the Kelmscott Press. Morris chose this Albion for the formidable task of printing the Kelmscott Chaucer and had the press reinforced with iron bands to keep the staple from cracking under the extra pressure required to print the heavy forms of this monumental book. After Morris' death, the Albion was owned first by C.R. Ashbee's Essex House Press, and then subsequently by the Old Bourne and Pear Tree Presses, before it was purchased by Bertha and Frederic Goudy in 1924. The Goudys brought the Albion to America where it joined the "typecasters" and other foundry equipment of the Village Press and their Press of the Woolly Whale. In 1960, Elizabeth and Ben Lieberman acquired the press after it had resided with several additional printers. When the Liebermans' Herity Press took possession of the Albion, its history was so ingrained that it was dubbed the Kelmscott/Goudy Press, nicknamed "K/G." The Liebermans placed a Liberty Bell to the top of the press, and the Morris Society approved of the alteration "as a pledge to the freedom of the press which the personal printer represents and helps sustain."

On December 10, 2013 the Cary Graphic Arts Collection at the Rochester Institute of Technology announced that they bought the press:
"In 1924, American type designer Frederic Goudy imported Albion No. 6551 from England to Marlborough, N.Y., for use in his Village Press. Shortly thereafter, Goudy sold it to Spencer Kellogg Jr., who ran the Aries Press of Eden, N.Y.
“From 1932 to 1941, Albion No. 6551 was owned by the Cary Collection’s namesake, Melbert B. Cary Jr., director of Continental Type Founders Association and proprietor of the private Press of the Woolly Whale,” Galbraith explained.
“Cary bequeathed the press to his pressman George Van Vechten, and in 1960, J. Ben and Elizabeth Lieberman acquired Albion No. 6551 for their Herity Press. They topped the press with a Liberty Bell, a reminder of the vital role that private presses play in the freedom of the press.”
"Albion No. 6551 will join the Cary Collection’s Arthur M Lowenthal Memorial Pressroom, a working collection of 15 historical printing presses and more than 1,500 fonts of metal and wood type. Supporting study of the press is a collection of Kelmscott Press publications and archives of material related to Frederic Goudy and Cary’s Press of the Woolly Whale."

"vendetta" = dt. "Blutrache" zurück geht auf lat. "vindicta" = dt. "Rache", lat. "vindicare" = dt. "bestrafen", "rächen". Gleichen Ursprungs ist auch dt. "Revanche" und "revanchieren", die über frz. "revanche" und "revancher", zurück gehen auf lat. "re-" = dt. "zurück", "wieder" und (frz. "venger"), lat. "vindicare" = dt. "rächen".
The show business trade paper Variety turns 100 this year, and it continues to vex and amuse its readers with a language all its own. Reporter Gloria Hillard explains from H'w'd.
