Erzählt wird die Geschichte des Tierarztes Dr. Marsh Tracy (Marshall Thompson), der zusammen mit seiner Tochter Paula (Cheryl Miller) im afrikanischen Busch eine Station für kranke Tiere betreibt. Mit der weiteren Hilfe des Amerikaners Jack Dane (Yale Summers) und des Einheimischen Mike Makula (Hari Rhodes) kümmern sich die beiden jedoch nicht nur um die Tiere der Umgebung, sondern beschäftigen sich auch mit den Sorgen und Nöten der Menschen, legen Wilderern das Handwerk und setzen sich für den Schutz ihrer Umwelt ein. Die eigentlichen Stars der Serie sind jedoch die Tiere, allen voran der schielende Löwe Clarence und das übermütige Schimpansenweibchen Judy, das für jede Menge Schabernack sorgt.

It would be easy to assume that "Jumbo" was named "Jumbo" because he was so large. At over 13 feet he was definitely tall for an African elephant, but it was the other way around. His name — thought to derive from the Swahili word "jambo" for "hello", or "jumbe" for "chief" or "boss" — came before "jumbo" was slang word for "huge". The word that today is used to describe everything from "giant shrimp" to "oversized paper towel rolls" comes from the "boss elephant" himself.

The Elephant Boot

This canvas and leather lace boot was made for Jumbo the elephant. It was one of four made for the eleven year old female elephant to wear when she took part in the British Alpine Hannibal Expedition in 1959. The expedition tried to re-trace the route used to invade Italy by Hannibal in 218BC. The boots were made by Lotus Ltd in Northampton and this one was presented to the company by the leader of the expedition John Hoyte on their return. The other boots are at Rome University, in Cambridge and in America. Unfortunately Jumbo was unable to finish the last eight kilometers of the expedition as the track was considered unsafe.

The name is perhaps from slang "jumbo" = "clumsy", "unwieldy fellow" (1823), which itself is possibly from a word for "elephant" in a West African language (compare Kongo "nzamba"). OED suggests it is possibly the second element in "Mumbo Jumbo". Century Dictionary says "The name was given as having an African semblance." As a product size, by 1886 (cigars). "Jumbo jet" attested by 1964. "Jumbo" was accidentally killed near St. Thomas, Ontario, Sept. 15, 1885, struck by a freight train while the circus was loading up to travel.

We are sure that most of our readers have seen a real, live elephant. Many may even have ridden one. In the mid-19th century, unless you travelled to far-flung parts of the globe, elephants were something only read about in books. Until one was acquired by the London Zoological Gardens, that is. As it was a magnificent African elephant, it was given a magnificent African name. At least, it was given an African name (kind of). The zoo-keepers named the elephant "Jumbo", which was probably the only African word they knew. It is, in fact, a slightly garbled version of the Swahili word "jambo" which means "hello".

In 1882 the London Zoo sold "Jumbo" to Phineas T. Barnum, the great showman. Barnum's flair for publicity ensured that the name "Jumbo" became synonymous with "huge".

L'incroyable histoire de Jumbo l'éléphant

"Jumbo" était un très grand éléphant de savane d'Afrique qui a fait l’objet dans la presse d’un reportage comme on n’en avait jamais consacré à un animal de zoo, ce qui le rendit célèbre dans le monde entier. Né en 1861 en "Abyssinie" (actuelle "Éthiopie"), il fut envoyé à Paris et il fit partie de la ménagerie du Jardin des plantes. En 1865, il fut échangé contre un rhinocéros du zoo de Londres où il arriva le 26 juin.

C'est, dit-on, son gardien de Londres, Matthew Scott, qui a donné à "Jumbo" son surnom, lequel en swahili signifie "Hello !" ("Jambo"). Atteignant la taille impressionnante de quatre mètres de hauteur, "Jumbo" devint une nouvelle attraction du jardin zoologique de Londres. Il laissait les enfants monter sur son dos et on estime que pendant la période où il est resté à Londres il a porté plus d'un million d'enfants, parmi lesquels Winston Churchill et Theodore Roosevelt.

Cet éléphant célèbre a donné son nom à de nombreux artéfacts et entreprises et a naturellement été repris pour désigner d'autres éléphants. Ce terme est devenu le synonyme de "gros" et "grand". Par exemple les "jumbo jet", surnom du gros porteur "Boeing 747". In den vergangenen 40 Jahren entwickelte sich die Boeing-Maschine zum wichtigsten Flugzeug vieler Fluglinienbetreiber, kann sie doch mit ihren rund 500 Sitzplätzen hervorragend Langstreckenflüge bedienen. Über 3,5 Milliarden Menschen wurden in den letzten 40 Jahren damit befördert - etwa die Hälfte der Weltbevölkerung. Und für Boeing war die Maschine ein sehr gutes Geschäft.

Angeblich begann die Entwicklung des Jumbo-Jets mit den folgenden Worten: "Wenn du es baust, kauf´ ich es." - "Wenn du es kaufst, bau´ ich es." Gesprächspartner waren der damalige Chef der Fluglinie Pan American World Airways, Juan Trippe, und Boeing Präsident William Allen.

Eigentlich hatte Boeing einen großen Militär-Transporter geplant, der Auftrag wurde dann allerdings an die Firma Lockheed vergeben. Boeing musste aber wegen der Konkurrenz auch neue zivile Flugzeuge anbieten und griff bei der Entwicklung der Boeing-747 auf die Planungen für den Militärtransporter zurück.

So wurden 75000 technische Zeichnungen angefertigt, um die 747 zum damals größten Flugzeug der Welt zu machen. Es war doppelt so groß wie das bis dato größte Modell Boeings und eineinhalbmal größer als das größte damals existierende Verkehrsflugzeug. Schnell hatte es den Spitznamen "Jumbo" weg. Es mussten neue Fertigungshallen gebaut werden weil die alten zu klein waren, und die mit der Entwicklung betrauten Ingenieure hießen bei Boeing nur "the incredibles" - "die Unglaublichen".

Wie lange ist die Startbahn bei einem Jumbo- Jet?

Flugzeuge benötigen zum Starten und Landen je nach ihrer Größe unterschiedlich lange Lande- und Startbahnen. Welche Länge benötigt ein Jumbo-Jet um sicher landen zu können? Carolin aus Viersen stellte diese Frage. Wir haben die Frage an den Sprecher des Flugehafens Nürnberg, Reto Manitz, weitergegeben und er hat uns freundlicherweise Folgendes geantwortet:

Eine Jumbo (747-400) hat leer eine Start- und Landestrecke von 1400 Metern.

Vollbeladen benötigt der Jumbo 3000 Meter. Die benötigte Strecke hängt unter anderem stark vom Gewicht der Maschine ab.

"Jumbo": Die weiße Rebsorte ist eine Neuzüchtung zwischen den beiden bekannten Tafeltraubensorten Italia x Sultanina (Sultana). Die Kreuzung erfolgte in Italien. Sie wird als Tafeltraube verwendet.

"Jumbo", of course, is a word we use to mean "very large", or at least "much bigger than you would expect". Advertisers often call things "jumbo" to get people to buy them, even when (in the case of "jumbo shrimp", for instance) "jumbo" doesn't make a lot of sense. It took me so long to give away a litter of kittens a few years ago that they began to turn into full-grown cats, so I advertised them as "jumbo kittens". It actually worked.

Unfortunately, no one is certain where "jumbo" came from, though we do have a few clues. There is a good possibility that it comes from "Mumbo Jumbo" (or "Mama Dyumbo"), which was the name of a god worshipped in parts of Africa. Because Europeans at the time regarded such worship as mysterious and primitive, "mumbo jumbo" came to mean "nonsense" or "gibberish" in English.

Just how "mumbo jumbo" might have led to "jumbo" meaning "large" is unclear, but by 1823 "jumbo" was being used to mean a "big, clumsy person, animal or thing". The most famous "jumbo" of the 1800s was a very large elephant named, naturally, "Jumbo", that was exhibited in London and eventually sold to P.T. Barnum in 1882. "Jumbo" was so popular that from then on "anything a bit larger than normal", from peanuts to jet airplanes, was described as "jumbo".

"Jumbo" arrived from Paris on 26 June 1865 and he remained in London for years, giving rides to thousands of children and becoming a great favourite with the public. When fully grown he was the largest elephant known at the time, standing 12 feet tall and weighing over six tons. However, the Zoo became worried that "Jumbo" was getting very cantankerous and difficult (bull elephants are notoriously hard to keep captive) and that he would become a danger to his keeper and to the public. The Zoo sold him to Barnum and Bailey’s Circus in 1882 (he was sadly to be killed by a train in Ontario three years later).

His influence was greatest in North America, where "Jumbo" became a great attraction during his short residence (Thomas Alva Edison, always the publicity hound ready to jump on a popular bandwagon, named one of his new electric dynamos "Jumbo" in 1884). The word has been around ever since, especially in North America, as a neat way to describe anything large of its type, and led to compounds like "jumboburger", "jumbo-sized", and "jumbo pack". Walt Disney clearly had him in mind when he named his cartoon elephant "Dumbo". However, the introduction of the "jumbo jet" in the 1960s helped to move the word into international English and to popularise it more widely.

Treiberameisen - Dorylinae - Insecta

Die "Treiberameisen" ("Dorylinae"), auch "Heeresameisen" genannt, zählen innerhalb der Familie der "Ameisen" ("Formicidae") zur Gattung "Dorylus". Im Englischen werden die "Treiberameisen" "driver ants", "safari ants" oder "siafu" genannt. Weil die Ameisen der Unterfamilie Dorylinae ihre Beute förmlich vor einer riesigen geraden Front hertreiben, erhielt sie den deutschen Trivialnamen "Treiberameisen".

Die Dorylinae ist eine Unterfamilie der alten Welt, zu der auch die Unterfamilie Aenictinae gehört. In der Neuen Welt kommt ausschließlich die Unterfamilie Ecitoninae vor. Die Unterfamilie Dorylinae ist nur mit einer Gattung Dorylus vertreten, deren etwa 70 Arten mit ihren derzeit bekannten 60 Unterarten vor allem in Zentralafrika und in Ostafrika sowie im tropischen Asien vorkommen.

Safari Katze – Merkmale und Verhalten

Manchmal kommt es zur Kreuzung von Wildkatzen mit Hauskatzen und mitunter entwickeln sich daraus ganz besondere Katzenrassen. Dies trifft beispielsweise auf die "Safari-Katze" zu: Sie ist das Ergebnis einer Kreuzung von einer wilden Kleinfleckkatze mit Hauskatzen.

Die Züchtungen begannen in den 70er Jahren. Einige dieser Tiere wurde auch für die Leukämie-Forschung an der Washington State University verwendet, da man feststellte, dass diese Katzenrasse zum Teil gegen Leukämie immun ist.

There, in partnership with the sixth marquess of Bath, he built the world's first safari park. While the fences were being installed, The Times denounced the scheme as 'a dangerous folly', and called for its suppression; this made excellent publicity for the venture, which opened at Easter 1966 and proved a colossal success.

This safari park is located in Wiltshire, and was first opened in 1966. It is in the grounds of Longleat House, a stately home, also open to the public.

The idea of safari parks came from jimmy Chipperfield – former co-director of Chipperfield’s Circus.

There are over 500 animals in the park and it is a sprawling estate which covers 9,000 acres.
