Engl., "funeral" (1437), dt. "funeral-" = dt. "Begräbnis", "Beerdigung", "Bestattung" bezeieht sich auf altfrz. "funérailles" = "Begräbnis" und basiert auf mlat. "funeralia", lat. "funeralis" = "zum Leichenbegräbnis gehörend", lat. "funus" (gen. funeris) = "Begräbnis".Lat. "funus" geht weiter zurück auf lat. "funis" = "Seil", "Tau", "Strick", Leine" und soll sich auf die Seile zum Tragen des (toten) Körpers während der Begräbniszeremonie beziehen.
Als mögliche Wurzel findet man ide. "*dheu-" = dt. "sterben", engl. "to die". Diese passt allerdings nicht mit dem Hinweis auf lat. "funis" = "Seil" zusammen.
Eine weitere Quelle führt "funeral" auf lat. "funis" = dt. "Fackel", engl. "torch" zurück. Da engl. "torch" (13. Jh.) jedoch über altfrz. "torche" = "Verdrilltes", "Verdrehtes" (ursprünglich also in Wachs getauchte geflochtene Schnüre) auf lat. "torquere" = "drehen", "verflechten" zurück geht (vgl. dt. "torkeln") bestätigt dies den Bezug zu "Seil", "Tau".
