Auflage des Brockhaus Konversationslexikons ("Allgemeine deutsche Real-Encyklopädie für die gebildeten Stände", 12 Bde., Leipzig 1827 - 1829) herausgegebene "The encyclopedia Americana" (Kurztitel: "The Americana"), 13 Bde., Philadelphia (Pa.) 1829 - 1833. (Seitdem mehrere Neuausgaben. Zur laufenden Aktualisierung erscheint seit 1923 "The Americana annual".)

Die älteste jüdische Enzyklopädie in englischer Sprache ist "The Jewish encyclopedia", 12 Bde., New York, London 1901-1906.

Als erste kanadische Enzyklopädie gilt "The Encyclopedia of Canada", 6 Bde., Toronto 1935-1937.

Die 1980 im Verlag Grolier, New York, erschienene 21bändige "Grolier Academic American Encyclopedia" wurde 1985, ebenfalls von Grolier, als erstes Lexikon auf dem elektronischen Datenträger CD-ROM herausgebracht.

What is an Encyclopedia?

At the most basic level, encyclopedias can be characterized as books about things, while dictionaries are books about words. Encyclopedias synthesize knowledge, giving readers a view of what is known about a myriad of specific topics, and present an orderly assembly of the facts essential to an understanding of each topic. Modern encyclopedias are designed to serve as a point of reference from which a reader can proceed to other sources that contain more detailed information. The term encyclopedia derives from classical Greek meaning "rounded education" (enkyklios paideia, "circle of learning").
