La Nouvelle-Zélande à travers l'histoire - la découverte, la colonisation et les guerres néo-zélandaises.

Il y a 80 millions d’années, une masse de terres, qu’on nommera Rangitata, se sépare de l’antique super-continent Gondwana : c’est le début de l’histoire haute en couleur de la Nouvelle-Zélande ! Rangitata, au fil des millénaires, va évoluer et donner naissance à la Nouvelle-Zélande Aotearoa d’aujourd’hui.

C’est probablement entre 950 et 1130 après J.C. que les Polynésiens découvrent la Nouvelle-Zélande et s’y installent ; et selon toute vraisemblance, c’est à la même époque que le peuple Moriori s’installe dans les îles Chatham (« Rekohu » en Maori), un petit groupe d'îles au large de la Nouvelle-Zélande.

En 1642 le premier explorateur européen, Abel Janszoon Tasman, un Hollandais, pénètre dans les eaux néo-zélandaises. La première rencontre entre Maoris et Européens va être violente, entraînant la mort d’un Maori et de quatre marins hollandais. Tasman va dresser une carte partielle des côtes néo-zélandaises, et repartira sans même avoir mis pied à terre.

Ce n’est que 100 ans plus tard qu’arriveront à nouveau des européens.
