The H. M. Ngata English-Maori Dictionary is the first dictionary to offer an extensive selection of English to Maori headwords, illustrating their use in sentences and phrases drawn from a wide range of contemporary and traditional contexts.

An important aim of the dictionary is to assist learners of the Maori language, particularly students in the classroom, but it will be equally valuable for those already familiar with the Maori language. It is a concise English-Maori dictionary, which is explicitly, but not exclusively, based on Ngati Porou and East Coast dialect and idiom. The English-Maori Dictionary complements the use of other dictionaries of Maori and English and glossaries produced by other agencies such as Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Maori (the Maori Language Commission).

Maori Dictionary Online

Tena koe. Nau mai ki Te Aka. Welcome to the online version of Te Aka Maori-English, English-Maori Dictionary and Index. This online Maori dictionary is aimed at providing quick access but it is recommended that you also purchase the hard copy for use in class and when you are not online.

As well as the words one would expect in a traditional dictionary, Te Aka has encyclopaedic entries including the names of plants and animals (especially native and endemic species), stars, planets and heavenly bodies, important Maori people, key ancestors of traditional narratives, tribal groups and ancestral canoes. Maori names for institutions, country names, place names and other proper names are also provided. There are also explanations of key concepts central to Maori culture. Comprehensive explanations for grammatical items are included, with examples of usage, as are idioms and colloquialisms with their meanings and examples. These have all been included because they are important in communicating in a Maori context, and contribute to understanding and speaking the language in a natural way.

This dictionary is indexed to the Te Whanake Maori language series of narrative texts and resources, giving you quick access to topics, grammatical and usage explanations, idioms and colloquialisms, maps and illustrations.
