Ein angeregter Zustand kann sich nach einem Alpha- oder Betazerfall einstellen; er kann aber auch durch "Beschuß" des Kerns mit Strahlung von außen erreicht werden. Aus diesem Grund folgt in der Regel nach einem a- oder ß-Zerfall "Gammastrahlung". Die Lebensdauer eines angeregten Zustandes ist kleiner als 10**-8 Sekunden. Von den unten dargestellten Ausnahmen (Metastabilität) abgesehen folgt die Gammastrahlung daher "sofort" (< 10**-8 s) einer vorangegangenen a- oder b-Strahlung.
