Redouté Rosen (W3)

Es gibt keine Rosensorte "Malmaison-Rose". Als "Malmaison-Rose" werden Rosen bezeichnet, die einst im Jardin de Malmaison der Kaiserin von Frankreich, Joséphine Bonaparte (Joséphine de Beauharnais, 23.06.1763 - 29.05.1814), Frau von Kaiser Napoleon, zu finden waren. Die "Roserie du Chateau de la Malmaison" war zur Zeit der Kaiserin Josephine der berühmteste Rosengarten der Welt.

Statt von "Malmaison-Rosen" könnte man sicherlich auch von "Joséphine-Rosen" sprechen - da die Sammlerin die treibende Kraft hinter der Rosensammlung war.

Auch könnte man von den "Redouté-Rosen" sprechen. Pierre-Joseph Redouté war in diesem Fall nicht der Hofmaler der Kaiserin sondern der Rosenmaler der Rosensammlerin Joséphine.

Der Maler Pierre-Joseph Redouté schuf von 1804 bis 1814 mit seinen Rosenbildern aus der Rosen-Sammlung von Kaiserin Josephine in Malmaison bei Paris einen bleibenden Kunstschatz. In dieser Sammlung waren alle damals bekannten Rosen und Varietäten (ca. 200-300) aufgepflanzt.

Einer der berühmtesten Blumenzeichner war Pierre-Joseph Redouté. Er machte mit seinen Zeichnungen die Rosen im Garten Malmaison unsterblich. In den Jahren 1817-1824 (also nach seinem Tod) erschien das berühmte Werk, von dem es heißt, er habe darin die Rosen von Malmaison gemalt "Les Roses". Sie waren entstanden im Garten von Malmaison und in den Gärtnereien der genannten französischen Rosenfirmen, die Josephine belieferten.

Pierre-Joseph Redouté was a French artist of the late 18th and early 19th century. Redouté mastered the unusual technique of stipple engraving - the use of tiny dots, rather than lines. This made possible the subtle variations in coloring for which his work is known.

Vermutlich sind die drei Rosenmengen nicht deckungsgleich. So dürfte Redouté wohl nicht alle Rosensorten des Gartens verewigt haben. Und evtl. hat er auch Rosen gemalt, die er nicht im Garten von Joséphine gefunden hat. Dennoch kann man diese drei Bezeichnungen bei großzügiger Auslegung synonym benutzen.

Als Josephine am 29.05.1814 in Malmaison mit 50 Jahren starb enthielt ihr Rosengarten rund 250 Rosensorten, darunter 167 Provins-Rosen (Gallica), 27 Centifolien, 3 Moosrosen, 9 Damascener-Rosen, 22 Bengal-Rosen (chinensis), 4 pimpinellifolia, 8 alba-Sorten, 3 foetida-Sorten, ferner die Spezies Moschata, alpina, bansiae, laevigata, rubrifolia, rugosa, sempervirens und setigera. Das waren alle erhältlichen Rosensorten ihrer Zeit!

In den Jahren 1900 bis 1905 hatte "Jules Gravereaux", einer der besten Rosenkenner, die Frankreich je besaß, aus selbstloser Liebhaberei begonnen, für seinen Rosengarten in "L'Hay les Roses" (F-94200 L'Hay-les-Roses) die Sorten der Kaiserin Joséphine wieder zusammenzusuchen. Mit Hilfe des legendären Tafelwerks von Redouté und seinen zahlreichen weltweiten Kontakten zu Wissenschaftlern, Botanikern, Rosenzüchtern gelang es ihm, alle Sorten wieder aufzufinden, zu bestimmen und in seinem Rosengarten anzupflanzen.

Noch heute ist dieser Rosengarten eine Erinnerung an die Kaiserin (während in Malmaison im heutigen Rosengarten kaum eine der alten Rosen zu finden ist).

The History of Roses

Roses have a long and colorful history. They have been symbols of love, beauty, war, and politics. The rose is, according to fossil evidence, 35 million years old. In nature, the genus Rosa has some 150 species spread throughout the Northern Hemisphere, from Alaska to Mexico and including northern Africa. Garden cultivation of roses began some 5,000 years ago, probably in China. During the Roman period, roses were grown extensively in the Middle East. They were used as confetti at celebrations, for medicinal purposes, and as a source of perfume. Roman nobility established large public rose gardens in the south of Rome. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the popularity of roses seemed to rise and fall depending on gardening trends of the time.

During the fifteenth century, the rose was used as a symbol for the factions fighting to control England. The white rose symbolized York, and the red rose symbolized Lancaster, as a result, the conflict became known as the "War of the Roses."

Roses were in such high demand during the seventeenth century that royalty considered roses or rose water as legal tender, and they were often used as barter and for payments. Napoleon's wife Josephine established an extensive collection of roses at Chateau de Malmaison, an estate seven miles west of Paris in the 1800s. This garden became the setting for Pierre Joseph Redoute's work as a botanical illustrator. In 1824, he completed his watercolor collection "Les Rose," which is still considered one of the finest records of botanical illustration.

It wasn't until the late eighteenth century that cultivated roses were introduced into Europe from China. Most modern-day roses can be traced back to this ancestry. These introductions were repeat bloomers, making them unusual and of great interest to hybridizers, setting the stage for breeding work with native roses to select for hardiness and a long bloom season. Many of these early efforts by plant breeders are of great interest to today's gardeners.

Pierre Joseph, Court appointed painter to Marie Antoinette and Empress Josephine, Redout's credo was, "one does best what one loves most, however humble the pursuit." He is best remembered for his paintings of plants, especially roses and lilies. His paintings from Empress Josephine's garden at La Malmaison provide modern gardeners with an invaluable visual documentary of the roses grown two hundred years ago.

Sie ist die Stammmutter vieler Zwergrosen und wird auch als "Kußrose" bezeichnet.
