Abstract

The languages Norwegian, Danish and Swedish all belong to the North Germanic language family and go back to the same origin, the so-called Ancient Scandinavian. Therefore they resemble each other in terms of grammar and lexis. In the course of the past centuries, they were influenced by a variety of foreign languages and cultures, namely Latin, French and German. Since 1945, this has mainly been (American) English. Despite a similar linguistic and cultural background the proceeding success of English in almost every area of life evokes, however, different reactions in the three countries in question: while in Sweden and Norway campaigns for the protection of their mother tongue have been launched, Denmark remains tolerant towards foreign language influences. These different attitudes are also reflected in the number and acceptance of Anglicisms that have entered the three languages. In this paper, Manfred Görlach’s investigations on Anglicisms in the Norwegian language, which are collected in his Dictionary of European Anglicisms, were taken as a starting point and similar information about the Danish and Swedish language, in this case concerning the initial letters F and H, were added by working through various dictionaries. Thus, it can generally be observed that indeed not only the proportion of Anglicisms in the Danish language but also the degree of acceptance is higher than in Norwegian and Swedish, which follow in this order.
