I was reading through your back issues (way back to Issue 5) and found your discussion on myriad. You said the root myriados meant exactly "10,000". In studying Chinese culture I found that they have been using the term "the 10,000 things" for longer than recorded history. They had no word to encompass everything, but instead used the phrase "the 10,000 things."

Fascinating! Isn't that the number they symbolize with the swastika?

The adage "A picture is worth a thousand words" refers to the notion that a complex idea can be conveyed with just a single still image. It also aptly characterizes one of the main goals of visualization, namely making it possible to absorb large amounts of data quickly.

It is believed that the modern use of the phrase stems from an article by Fred R. Barnard in the advertising trade journal Printers' Ink, promoting the use of images in advertisements that appeared on the sides of streetcars. The December 8, 1921 issue carries an ad entitled, "One Look is Worth A Thousand Words."

Another ad by Barnard appears in the March 10, 1927 issue with the phrase "One Picture is Worth Ten Thousand Words", where it is labeled a Chinese proverb. The Home Book of Proverbs, Maxims, and Familiar Phrases quotes Barnard as saying he called it "a Chinese proverb, so that people would take it seriously." Soon after, the proverb would become popularly attributed to Confucius.

Die Redensart "die oberen Zehntausend" geht zurück auf einen Leitartikel des Journalisten Nathaniel Parker Willis (1807-1867) im "Evening Mirror", New York, vom 11.11.1844. Da heißt es: "At present there is no distinction among the upper tenthousand of the city".

Während man in Amerika heute die Reichsten der Reichen zu den "Four hundred" rechnet, sagt man in Großbritannien "The upper Ten".

Wenn wir heute von "den oberen Zehntausend" sprechen, dann meinen wir Personen der begütertsten Gesellschaft, sehr prominente Personen oder Menschen, die sich dafür halten.

Ten Thousand Statistically Grammar-Average Fake Band Names

When working on the paper "The Quest for Ground Truth in Musical Artist Similarity" (paper PDF link) we built MusicSeer to collect human evaluation of artist similarity. We expected a lot of responses but needed a way to ferret out "bad" results - robots, users just clicking randomly, and people that didn't know the bands presented. One idea was to pepper the list with "red herrings" in the form of fake bandnames - and if someone chose one, we'd ignore their responses later on.

Instead of thinking up a few, I made a quick script to part-of-speech tag the original list of 6,500 artist names that we were considering. This left us with a set of common band name grammars (popular ones were NNP NNP and NNP #.) We then fed terms from our already collected music text set ('Klepmit') through the grammars again (at the natural probabilities) to make some believable names.

If you start a band with one of these and get famous, I only ask that you don't use "Caldera Catnip", as it is already taken.

Abstract:

"Myriahedral projections" are a new class of methods for mapping the earth. The globe is projected on a "myriahedron", a "polyhedron" with a very large number of faces. Next, this "polyhedron" is cut open and unfolded. The resulting maps have a large number of interrupts, but are (almost) conformal and conserve areas. A general approach is presented to decide where to cut the globe, followed by three different types of solution. These follow from the use of meshes based on the standard graticule, the use of recursively subdivided polyhedra and meshes derived from the geography of the earth. A number of examples are presented, including maps for tutorial purposes, optimal foldouts of Platonic solids, and a map of the coastline of the earth.

The Latin word "myriad" is derived from the Greek word "murioi", which means "ten thousands" or "innumerable". We project the surface of the earth on such a "myriahedron", we label its edges as folds or cuts, and fold it out to obtain a flat map.

Project

"Ten Thousand Cents" is a digital artwork that creates a representation of a $100 bill. Using a custom drawing tool, thousands of individuals working in isolation from one another painted a tiny part of the bill without knowledge of the overall task. Workers were paid one cent each via Amazon's Mechanical Turk distributed labor tool. The total labor cost to create the bill, the artwork being created, and the reproductions available for purchase (to charity) are all $100. The work is presented as a video piece with all 10,000 parts being drawn simultaneously. The project explores the circumstances we live in, a new and uncharted combination of digital labor markets, "crowdsourcing", "virtual economies", and digital reproduction.

Die im 12. Jahrhundert zur Stärkung der Kreuzfahrer entstandenen, im 15. Jahrhundert verbreiteten Legenden erzählen, wie ein Teil der Truppen Kaiser Hadrians zu Beginn des 2. Jahrhunderts siegreich Aufrührern gegenüber stand. Da bekehrte eine Engelsstimme den Anführer Achatius; ihm folgten 9000 Mann, die eine ermutigende Vorausschau ihres Martyriums erlebten. Mit allen vor den Kaiser gebracht, verweigerte Achatius die heidnischen Opfer und die Anbetung der „Idole”. Die umstehende Menge warf mit Steinen und verlangte den Tod der 9000. Diese wurden daraufhin mit Knütteln geschlagen; da bebte die Erde, Feuer verbrannte die Hände der Henkersknechte, aus der Menge trat einer, zum Glauben bekehrt, mit seinen Brüdern hervor - die Zahl der 10.000 wurde erfüllt.

Anthimos war Bischof von Nikomedia - dem heutigen Ízmit. Als im kaiserlichen Palast in der Stadt, die damals die Residenzstadt von Kaiser Diokletian war, ein Brand ausbrach, verdächtigte man die Christen der Brandstiftung, deshalb sollten alle Christen getötet werden. Der Bischof starb, indem er enthauptet wurde; mit ihm starben der Überlieferung nach der Diakon Theophilus sowie Dorotheus und Mardonius, der Diakon Migdonius und Peter, Indes, Gorgonius, Zeno, die Jungfrau Domna und Euthymios. Andere Überlieferung nennt als Gefährtinnen Indes sowie Domna und dazu wie in der orthodoxen Kirche Agathia (Agape) und Theophila.

Noch im Martyrologium Romanum von 1956 werden als Gefährten von Anthimos 10.000 Märtyrer genannt und ihrer am 18. März gedacht; Eusebius hatte von einer großen Anzahl von Märtyrern berichtet, die bei Ausbruch der Verfolgungen unter Kaiser Diokletian mit Anthimos starben.

Zehntausend-Jahres-Uhr (W3)

Zehntausend-Jahres-Uhr, ein Projekt der Long Now Foundation zur Konstruktion eines Uhrwerks mit einer der Ewigkeit möglichst nahe kommenden Laufzeit.

Die private Long Now Foundation wurde 1996 in San Francisco gegründet, um ein weit zukunftsgerichtetes Bewusstsein in der Öffentlichkeit zu propagieren. Die Stiftung verfolgt mehrere ewigkeitsorientierte Projekte, darunter die Zehntausend-Jahres-Uhr und das Rosetta-Projekt zur Aufzeichnung und dauerhaften Bewahrung sämtlicher Sprachen der Erde.

Um mindestens 10.000 Jahre weitgehend ohne menschliche Eingriffe zu laufen, muss das Uhrwerk aus extrem dauerhaften Materialien aufgebaut sein. Es soll möglichst kein Getriebe enthalten, denn Zahnräder verschleißen im Lauf der Jahrtausende. Zugleich darf die Uhr nur einen geringen Materialwert repräsentieren, damit künftige Generationen auch in Krisensituationen davon absehen, sie zu plündern. Die Energiequelle soll erneuerbar sein, aber nicht gestohlen werden können. Die Uhr soll extrem genau sein, aber ohne Elektronik auskommen, denn man muss sie mit einfachsten Mitteln reparieren können. Aus dem gleichen Grund darf die Uhr keine verborgenen oder gekapselten Teile enthalten, damit man ihre Funktionsweise einfach erkennen kann. Zudem soll sie skalierbar sein, d.h. man soll sie in einer beliebigen Größe nach dem gleichen Bauplan konstruieren können.

Dies sind schwere Anforderungen. Trotzdem gelang es der Long Now Foundation, eine solche Uhr zu bauen. Der oben abgebildete verkleinerte Prototyp wurde zur Jahrtausendwende in Gang gesetzt. Er synchronisiert sich jeden Tag auf mechanische Weise nach dem Sonnenstand und befindet sich derzeit im Science Museum in London. Die endgültige Uhr soll in wesentlich größerem Maßstab auf einem abgelegenen Berggipfel in der Wüste von Nevada aufgebaut werden.

Du musst mit möglichst wenigen Runden 10 000 Punkte erreichen. Dazu wird mit 6 Würfeln geworfen. Es gilt:

• Mindestens 1 Würfel muss für Punkte genommen werden, verfallen die in dieser Runde bisher erreichten Punkte, und die Runde ist beendet.
• Es müssen mindestens 250 Punkte erreicht werden, sonst ist die Runde zu Ende und es gibt keine Punkte.

Werden alle 6 Würfel verwendet, so muss nochnmal geworfen werden.
Nach dem ersten Wurf können die Würfel ausgesucht werden, die zählen sollen. Sie färben sich grün. Dann entweder [weitermachen] klicken, um nochmal mit den restlichen Würfeln zu spielen (Zwischenstand wird dann angezeigt), oder [Runde fertig] um die Punkte einzukassieren und eine neue Runde zu starten.

Nein, nein, Sie brauchen kein schlechtes Gewissen zu haben, dass Sie sich überhaupt bis hierhin durchgeklickt haben: Wer sich für Klatsch interessiert, so versichern psychologische Studien seit Jahren, tut nicht nur etwas für seine persönliche Seelenhygiene. "Wir brauchen den Klatsch. Er ist unser sozialer Klebstoff - ein unsichtbares Bindeglied der Menschheit, so überlebenswichtig wie das Atmen." Meint auch Gesellschaftsreporter Michael Gräter, wohl nicht zuletzt, um sein Lexikon des Klatsches auf diese Weise sogleich selbst in den Rang eines wesentlichen Beitrags zum Überleben der Menschheit zu erheben.

Dass die Welt tatsächlich auf dieses Buch gewartet hat, darf allerdings bezweifelt werden. Von Abbado, Claudio bis Zellweger, Renee unterzieht Gräter in erster Linie nationale (besonders gerne: Münchner), eher kursorisch auch internationale Stars und Sternchen einem echten Striptease. Biografische Daten, Karriere, Familie, Freunde - diese Standardkategorien werden je nach Ergiebigkeit im Einzelfall ergänzt durch die eigentlichen Kernfragen, die dem Klatschfreund so am Herzen liegen: Was macht eigentlich die blonde Frau Arafat? Mit wem geht Harald Schmidt jeden Abend ins Bett? Und ist Prinz Albert von Monaco jetzt wirklich schwul?

Sicher, manches hat man tatsächlich noch nie gehört, etwa, dass die immer so brav dreinschauende Bundespräsidenten-Gattin Christina Rau in ihrer Freizeit leidenschaftliche Bungee-Springerin und dass der notorische Fallschirmspringer Jürgen W. Möllemann privat Vorstand eines Dreimäderlhauses ist. Auch dass der VW-Chef Ferdinand Piech nicht nur Autos, sondern auch Kinder am laufenden Band produziert (laut Gräter insgesamt 13), kann man bei der nächsten zähen Abendeinladung mal fallenlassen.

Abgesehen von wenigen solchen Highlights ergeht sich Gräter allerdings meist in der Wiederholung des längst Bekannten und ist allzu bemüht, den vermeintlich exklusiven Charakter seiner Infos herauszustellen: Die Kategorie "Erinnerung" enthält fast immer mehr oder weniger belanglose und sterbenslangweilige Erlebnisse, die Gräter mit dem Prominenten vergönnt waren. Als Fazit bleibt also: Wer beim Zahnarzt nicht immer nur zu GEO oder Spiegel greift, sondern auch mal zur Yellow Press, weiß großenteils bereits, was in diesem Buch steht.

Mit einer Anschaulichkeit, die in der antiken Literatur ihresgleichen sucht, schildert Xenophon den abenteuerlichen Putschversuch des jungen persischen Prinzen Kyros gegen seinen Bruder, den Großkönig Artaxerxes II. Xenophon, selbst einer der Heerführer im Krieg 401 v. Chr., schildert packend die Vorgänge und beschreibt authentisch Land und Leute, Sitten und Bräuche. Damit legt er den Grundstein zur Memoirenliteratur: Caesars Gallischer Krieg oder Arrians Alexanderzug sind ohne Xenophon nicht denkbar.
